AP Press Release
Mobile News Network wins AP's 2008 Chairman's Prize
NEW YORK -- The Associated Press team
that led the development of the Mobile News Network has won
The Chairman's Prize, the company's highest honor for breakthrough
entrepreneurship and innovation affecting the news industry.
AP President and CEO Tom Curley, in announcing the award
selection, called the Mobile News Network "a transformational
product." The MNN is the first example of the Digital
Cooperative, a program designed to find new digital outlets
for the news and information produced by AP members.
"It truly fits the requirements of the Chairman's Prize,
which honors creative thinking, performance breakthroughs
and entrepreneurial change that affect AP and the news industry
we serve," Curley said.
The core team that led the development of MNN will be honored
at the annual AP awards ceremony at New York headquarters
in October. They are Jeff Litvack, global director for new
media markets, Global Product Development; Ben Mosse, deputy
director, business planning, Digital Business Development;
Anne Park, research analyst, Digital Business Development;
Richard Brett, software architect, Technology; and Paul Caluori,
director of client content services, Client Content Services.
"The assignment the team received was daunting: Move
quickly to develop a product that will deliver news from AP
and its members to smart phones as a first step toward opening
the cooperative to new revenue opportunities in the digital
world," Curley said. "They met the challenge, and
more."
The Chairman's Prize was created in 2004. The prize is named
after the current chairman, William Dean Singleton, and past
chairs Frank Batten, Frank Daniels, William Keating, Donald
Newhouse and Burl Osborne. They selected the winner from recommendations
by a committee of AP managers.
"At its launch, the multimedia portal site on iPhone
combined news from AP and more than 100 newspapers,"
Curley said. "A few months later, that number grew to
more than 725 newspapers, so that the MNN provides coverage
in all top 100 designated market areas. It now is the most
comprehensive offering available of news, sports, business
and entertainment information for consumers on the go."
The judges concurred that MNN "deserved to win because
it is a showcase of innovation for both AP and the industry,"
Curley said.
MNN provides mobile users with a single point of access to
news from hundreds of local publishers. They can customize
features for favorite sections and locations, view video and
photo galleries, search a 30-day archive of news stories,
and share content with friends.
Curley said: "So groundbreaking is it that AP has been
asked by other smart phone makers to develop client applications
for their phones."
Previous Chairman's Prize winners include Dwayne Desaulniers'
2007 team, which developed AP Exchange, Jim Kathman's 2006
team, which initiated the Online Video Network and Sandy MacIntyre's
2004 team, which created the AP Television News service APTN
Direct.
